Apps on Top: Spotlight Indexing Drives Awareness & Engagement

Why is shopping on our phones becoming so prevelant? Is it the new finger-friendly apps offered by our favorite brands? Is it the convenience of being able to order using the device already in your hand? Is it the efficiency of a smarter experience, one that predicts what you'll want to order before you even decide?  The truth is: it's all these things. It's the interactions large and small that make mobile shopping experiences today so much more appealing than they were just a few years ago.

One of our favorite examples of these small interactions, with big impacts, is Spotlight Indexing. 

Spotlight Indexing for iOS helps app content appear before web results on Spotlight Searches, or the built-in search function that can be accessed by swiping down on an iOS device. Before Apple opened up Spotlight Indexing for apps, the function would only search web optimized results, meaning apps and app content wouldn't show up. With the update, app suggestions from The App Store, as well as results from installed apps are returned, and prioritized above mobile web results. By enabling your customers' – and potential customers' – devices with the ability to find your app and products without even needing to know your brand, you can drive awareness, downloads, and purchase. 

Spotlight Indexing is simple: if I'm an iOS user, and decide I need a new pair of black boots, I might casually start by swiping down on my phone for a Spotlight Search. I input "black women's boots." Because your app is indexed in The App Store, it appears in my search results, since your app is a focused on selling just what I'm looking for. I've heard of your brand before, but haven't taken the time to look at your products, but decide to download your app now to see more. When I tap the app icon, I'm taken to its listing and quickly download it. Once I open the app, I find the perfect pair and make my order. A few weeks later, I decide I need a pair of red pumps. Going back to Spotlight Search, I perform another search. Since I've got your app downloaded now, results are served to me above those that come from mobile web. I see a pair I like, and re-open your app to make my purchase.
